"Les 400 coups" raconte l'histoire d'Antoine DOINEL, un adolescent de 14 ans en quête d'identité, d'une place dans la société. Il a des problèmes à l'école et avec ses parents. Il se découvre une passion pour le cinéma.
C'est le premier film qui rendit célèbre François TRUFFAUT et symbolise avec "A bout de souffle" de GODARD, la nouvelle vague. C'est également le premier film de Jean-Pierre LEAUD (Antoine DOINEL) qui marque le début du cycle Antoine DOINEL et pose les bases de son personnage et deviendra l'acteur fétiche de TRUFFAUT et de la nouvelle vague.
" Les 400 coups " est un film de François TRUFFAUT DE 1958. C'est le premier long métrage de TRUFFAUT, en 35mm scope (format des films d'Hollywood), noir et blanc de 93mn. "Le scope permet de rendre compte de la réalité avec un élément de stylisation qui m'était indispensable". Il a été primé dans de nombreux festivals notamment celui de la meilleure mise en scène à Cannes en 59.

Les Quatre Cents Coups, conocida en castellano como Los cuatrocientos golpes, es una película francesa de 1959 dirigida por François Truffaut. Fue la tercera película que dirigió Truffaut. Es considerada una de las la primeras obras de la denominada Nouvelle vague. Protagonizada por Jean-Pierre Léaud, como figura central.


El título se refiere a una expresión francesa cuya traducción podría ser "hacer las mil y una", refiriéndose a todas las trasgresiones del personaje en la película, aunque también juega con el significado estricto de la expresión, es decir, con la enorme cantidad de golpes que la vida propina al protagonista. La película es en gran parte autobiográfica, y presenta la primera aparición del personaje de Antoine Doinel, álter ego del propio Truffaut y que interpretará a lo largo de 20 años el mismo actor, Jean-Pierre Léaud.
Antoine Doinel es un adolescente parisino no especialmente querido por su familia. Su madre, que lo tuvo de soltera, tiene una conducta severa con él, su padrastro por su parte hace lo posible por tolerarlo.


La falta de atención de su familia hace de Doinel un alumno díscolo en el colegio, pero sus travesuras y la mala suerte que tiene al descubrir a su madre con un amante, hacen que se vaya encaminado progresivamente hacia el delito, lo cual dará pie para que su madre junto a su padrastro puedan buscar deshacerse del muchacho con mayor ímpetu, mientras él sufre todos los golpes que le da la vida a su tan corta edad.

The 400 Blows (French: Les Quatre Cents Coups) is a 1959 French film directed by François Truffaut. One of the defining films of the French New Wave, it displays many of the characteristic traits of the movement. The story revolves around Antoine Doinel, an ordinary adolescent in Paris, who is thought by his parents and teachers to be a trouble maker.
The English title is a straight translation of the French but misses its meaning, as the French title refers to the expression "faire les quatre cents coups", which means "to raise hell". On the first American prints, subtitler and dubber Noelle Gilmore gave the film the title Wild Oats, but the distributor did not like that title and reverted it to The 400 Blows, which led some to think the film covered the topic of corporal punishment.
Antoine Doinel is a boy growing up in France during the early 1950s. The movie opens to a group of Antoine’s classmates passing around a picture of a half-naked woman while writing their papers. When the picture comes to Antoine he defaces it and attempts to pass it forward when he is caught by his teacher who makes him stand in a corner the rest of the lesson and deprives him of recess. While alone he writes an angry poem about his teacher (whom he calls Sourpuss) on one of the classroom walls. One of the children tells and the teacher yells at him to clean up his mess only to yell at him later when it is not clean enough.
